Baptism is an ancient rite of initiation, the entry point to the life of faith in the Christian tradition. At Gloria Dei, we welcome anyone who is interested in baptism, regardless of their age or background. We also joyfully baptize babies, with parents and godparents making commitments to support the child in their life of faith.
Baptisms are almost always held during our normal Sunday servcies (which start at 10am). Baptisms take place at our historic font, which has been in continuous use since 1731 (one of the very oldest in the country!). In preparation, the person desiring baptism (or their parents and godparents) will meet with our priest, Rev. Chris Micklewright, to talk about their faith journey, the significance of baptism, and the logistics of the service.
Baptism is normally celebrated on one of the four especially appropriate feast days designated in the Book of Common Prayer: The Baptism of Our Lord; The Great Vigil of Easter; Pentecost; and All Saints Sunday. Other Sundays may also be chosen in consultation with Rev. Micklewright. Baptisms are not normally held during Lent (the 40 day season each year that leads up to Easter).
Gloria Dei Church has been a popular wedding venue since colonial times, with Betsy Ross having been married here in 1777. This tradition continues today, and we welcome all couples who are interested in inviting God to be a part of their wedding and marriage. Learn more about the variety of options we provide, from classic Episcopal services to self-uniting services, and even the ability to bring your own clergy.
Beyond weddings, it is also possible to rent the church or hall for events. The church can be an excellent space for concerts or lectures, while our hall can accommodate receptions, parties, memorials, and more.
When death occurs a family member is asked to contact the clergy so that timely arrangements for a funeral may be made. It is appropriate for the funeral of a Christian to take place in the church. It is also appropriate that funeral arrangements be made in advance and kept in a file in the church office. Burial plots are available for the Christian community in the newly opened Amandus Johnson section of our historic churchyard. Consult the church office for costs and details.
