DESCRIPTION:The first half of the 19th century was an era of upheaval. The
United States nearly lost the War of 1812. Partisanship became endemic dur
ing violent clashes regarding States’ Rights and the abolition of slaver
 y. The battle between Andrew Jackson and Nicholas Biddle over the Second B
ank of the United States epitomized a nation in turmoil: Biddle\, the erud
ite aristocrat versus Jackson\, the plain-spoken warrior. The conflict alt
ered America’s political arena.\nIn 1832\, President Andrew Jackson vowe
d to kill the Central Bank\, setting in motion the infamous Bank War that
almost bankrupted the nation. Under Biddle’s guidance\, the Second Bank
of the United States had become the most stable financial institution in t
he world. Biddle fought Jackson with tenacity and vigor\; so did members o
f Congress not under the sway of “Old Hickory.” Jackson accused Biddle
of treason\; Biddle declared that the president promoted anarchy. The fig
ht riveted the nation.\nThe United States is experiencing a reappearance o
f deep schisms within our population. They hearken back to the earliest de
bates about the federal government’s role regarding fiduciary responsibi
lity and social welfare. The ideological descendants of Nicholas Biddle an
d Andrew Jackson are as polarized today as they were during the nineteenth
century.\nDuring this talk\, author Cordelia Frances Biddle will document
the epic fight between Nicholas Biddle and Andrew Jackson over the fate o
f the Second Bank of the United States\, shedding new light with previousl
y undiscovered documents while bringing the story to life in a compelling
biography of political intrigue.\nAdmission is $12\, which includes a drin
k ticket for a beverage of your choice (alcoholic or non-alcoholic). Advan
ced tickets are available at a discounted rate of $10 each until the day b
efore the program.\nThis program will take place inside the church sanctua
ry\, followed by a reception in Riverside Hall. For a modest donation\, yo
u can taste delicious gourmet desserts paired with wine\, coffee or tea.\n
This program is hosted by Preserve Old Swedes\, the non-profit organizatio
n that preserves and interprets Gloria Dei (Old Swedes') Church. A portion
of the proceeds will go toward preserving this marvelous historic site.
