Originally founded as a Swedish Lutheran Church, Gloria Dei Church is a member of the Pennsylvania Diocese of the Episcopal Church of the United States, having joined the Episcopal Church in 1845. At that time, the Church of Sweden and the Church of England had very good relations and the assistant priests at Gloria Dei had been Episcopalians since the 1830's. All six congregations created by the Swedish mission to the Philadelphia area eventually joined the Episcopal Church, probably primarily because their members were English-speaking while the Lutheran Church in Philadelphia was largely German-speaking.
